SmartPass 4 (Encompass 4) AEI RF Identification Reader

The TransCore SmartPass 4 (Encompass 4 ATA) Reader has just been released by TransCore. It replaces both the AI1620-110 Low Power SmartPass Reader and the AI1620-114 High Power. It is upward compatible with both readers. The SmartPass 4 allows the user to adjust the output power

The SmartPass 4 reader is used to read railroad AT5110, AT5118, AT5125, AT5133, AT5510, AT5541 and AT5549 transportation tags. It will also read AT5102, AT5105, AT5106, AT5107, AT5112, AT5114, AT5146 and AT5147 access control tags. This unit contains an RF module, tag decoder, and power supply in a single module.

This reader can read rail car AEI tags at speeds of up to 60 mph.

There are several versions of the SmartPass 4 reader. One group has an internal antenna and the other a RF connector for an external antenna.

Both the internal and external antenna versions can be ordered with either an RS-232 or RS-422 serial interface. This makes it very easy to interface to almost any computer.

The part numbers for SmartPass reader with the internal antenna are 10-4002-008 for the RS-232 interface and 10-4004-008 for the RS-422 interface.

The part numbers for SmartPass reader with the external antenna connector are 10-4012-008 for the RS-232 interface and 10-4014-008 for the RS-422 interface.

When the SmartPass Reader reads a tag it translates the 120 bits of data encoded in the tag into twenty six-bit alpha/numeric characters. This text string is terminated with a carriage return and a line feed character and then sent to the computer over the serial interface.

With this simple interface, programs such as Windows's HyperTerminal can be used to view tag data and send commands to the SmartPass reader.

The input power is either 16 to 20 VAC (at 47 to 63 Hz) or 16 to 28 VDC. A 110 VAC to 18 VAC transformer (AI1620-005) is available. This allows the SmartPass reader to operate from commercial power.

The AI1620 SmartPass Reader has a connector on its back. All power and communication connections are made through this connector.

A customer can either purchase this pre-wired mating connecting cable or purchase a connector kit (AI1620-003) to wire his own cable.

This cable is five feet long; it has a SmartPass mating connector on one end and open wire leads on the opposite end.

The power requirements for the AI1620 SmartPass Reader are either 16 to 20 volts AC (47 to 63 Hz) or 18 to 28 volts DC. This transformer converts 110 volts AC to 18 volts AC so that a SmartPass reader can operate from conmercial power.
